I guess you can say Froggy was created way before Meridian got her. In early 1992 I started my computer online experience with my first 2400 baud modem. I leared alot about bits and parity and how to log onto remote Bulitin Board Systems. I found one called "Leather and Lace",aka L&L, which was a chat board. When it prompted for a "Handle, Login Name" my mind went blank. The first thing I could think of was Froggy, a nickname I had given to my niece at her birth. I started getting to know people without ever even meeting them in person! My first "GT" , or get together, was a wild experience. I showed up in my tight black pants and a black half shirt that zipped up. Needless to say, I wasn't shy and I felt like I already knew this strange mix of people. I spent the next 8 months developing these friendships, dating some of the men and moving from using "BBS's" to becoming a sysop of my own board, The LIllyPad, after gaining experience cosysopping on Anchorage Select. I met my now husband on L&L. The Lillypad died, but my husband and I always had "The Play Room". I slowly moved from BBS's to the internet. Shortly thereafter, Mark, my best friend, told me about a hot new game that was starting. I checked it out and signed up to beta test Meridian 59. I was assigned to something called server 1, I launched the software and though COOL! I got utterly lost. Within days I lost my password and didn't know how to get it back, so I just re-signed up and was assigned server 2. I was devistated that I wasn't on the same server as my best friend. By this time, Meridian wasn't taking anymore multiple accounts, and I had no clue how to get my old one back. So I spent my days learning the game, hoarding my shills to buy an account from someone for server 1. I finally saved enough and bought the ellusive server 1 account. Always as Froggy, I logged on and became even more addicted playing with Scoop. We would sit for hours at our monitors, talking on one phone line and playing on the other. One day rumors started flying about Meridian going "commercial" and that we would have to pay to play. Scoop and I debated. Addiction won out and we both ordered our cd copies of Meridian with his credit card. We actually even did the online ordering and then the registration together on the phone. Then Froggy and Scoop both moved to server 100! We worked on our characters together and chatted and spell casted thru the lag. Talked eachother thru quitting because of pkers. Shortly thereafter, we both got email for doing another beta for Meridian. We were both elated! Of course we did it. But for some reason, Scoop, busy with his guild and other Meridian friends, didn't get into beta. We drifted apart a bit. I met great people on beta, the names always changing, but you could tell who was who by the personalities that stood out. I've been honored to have been included in every beta since then. I love beta testing, the thrill of finding something new, trying to figure out why bugs occur and of course helping the other beta testers. The best part of beta is feeling that not only am I helping 3do test Meridian's evolution, but I have felt like an integral part of the game's creation. I may not be an owner or shareholder of 3do, but Meridian is in part mine, from the time and effort, love and friendships I have gathered there. Froggy has evolved and may move on someday. One of my pet peeves is all the name changing, I've lost friends to their name changes. So if you are someday on an online game and see a Froggy or if that name is taken, Froggy da Frog, it's probably me, Vanessa, lurking somewhere behind that character. |
